SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE DE DIUSSE CHURCH
A Romanesque church, with a beautiful Romanesque portal with five voussoirs and decorative capitals, and a small vaulted dungeon
This church was classified as a Historic Monument in 1999. Saint Jean-Baptiste de Diusse is a Romanesque church built in the first half of the 12th century, completed by a large square bell tower in the Gothic period. Its history is linked to that of the region, as it has had a military role. It has a beautiful Romanesque portal with five arches and decorative capitals, above which, in the thickness of the wall, there is a small dungeon vaulted in ogive and illuminated by two loopholes. In one corner, an iron chain sealed to the wall was used to tie the prisoners' feet. It was there that in 1104 Gaston IV, Viscount of Béarn, and Bernard III, Count of Armagnac, met to swear to respect the truce of God ordered by the Lateran Council, a truce intended to limit acts of violence in these troubled times. A historic Béarn church!
