THE GREETING
A 30-metre-high dungeon with two furnished rooms recreating daily life in the Middle Ages.
It is in 1060 that the name of Thibaud Juneau appears, the oldest known lord of Bazoges-en-Pareds. In 1356, Jehan Luneau, lord of Bazoges, obtained the authorization of his suzerain Guillaume Larchevèque, lord of Parthenay, to fortify the keep. Its restoration began in 1992: floors and windows are new, fireplaces and sculptures are from the 15th century. The general council bought the furniture and the weapons. The spiral staircase, with 80 steps, leads to the 5 floors of the dungeon and ends up on the covered way, which reaches a height of 30 meters. Each floor has two furnished rooms that recreate daily life in the Middle Ages. At the foot of the dungeon, a garden, labeled Remarkable Garden, reconstituted according to 15th century documents, divided into 4 parts: vegetable plants, medicinal plants, aromatic plants, "magic" plants, plus a collection of rose bushes. Near the garden, a superb pigeon house that could accommodate up to 4,000 guests allowed the lord to show his power and wealth. The pigeons were served at the lord's table and their droppings were used as fertilizer. On the same site, a museum of Art and Popular Tradition evokes life in the Vendée countryside at the beginning of the 20th century. Consisting of 16 squares with a sundial in its center, with a vegetable garden, aromatic, medicinal and witchcraft plants. Flowers and orchard complete this garden. The visit includes the keep and its museum of art and popular traditions with a bakery and a forge, and the visit of the garden of course.
