The medieval garden at Bazoges-en-Pareds features a square vegetable garden with a sundial at its center.
Few gardens today have survived the centuries in their original state. The Jardin Médiéval de Bazoges-en-Pareds, which has been awarded the "Jardin Remarquable" label, is a unique reconstruction in the Vendée. It has been historically reconstructed to present, as faithfully as possible, the characteristics of a medieval garden. It comprises a square vegetable garden with a sundial at its center, divided into 16 small plots, a flower triangle and an orchard. At the end of the tour, don't miss the magnificent 16th-century dovecote, with its 1,980 boulin holes representing the 990 hectares of arable land owned by the lord of Bazoges. The dovecote's location near the garden is no accident: pigeon droppings were used as fertilizer in the vegetable garden. Very few medieval gardens remain in the Vendée today. In the square vegetable garden, Harry Potter and wizardry fans will discover a fine collection of magical plants. Lovers of gardens and history will be delighted by this place, where they can observe a multitude of plant varieties. In the vegetable category: ecbalie (explosive cucumber), cucurbits, fennel, artichokes, cabbage... Medicinal plants: sage, soap plants..., aromatic and magical plants: sorrel, thyme, rosemary... Follow the tour with our enthusiastic guides to learn all about plants.
