The medieval garden at Bazoges-en-Pareds features a square vegetable garden with a sundial at its center.
Few gardens today have been able to survive the centuries in their original state. Labelled as a Remarkable Garden since 2018, the Medieval Garden of Bazoges-en-Pareds is a unique reconstitution in the Vendée. It has been historically reconstructed to present as faithfully as possible the characteristics of a medieval garden. It is composed of a square vegetable garden with a sundial in its center, divided into 16 small plots, a triangle of flowers and an orchard. At the end of the visit, don't miss the magnificent 16th century dovecote, with its 1,980 bolt holes representing the 990 hectares of cultivable land of the Lord of Bazoges. The place of the dovecote, located near the garden, is not chosen by chance: the droppings of the pigeons were used as fertilizer for the vegetable garden. In the Vendée, there are very few medieval gardens left today. In the square vegetable garden, Harry Potter and witchcraft fans will discover a beautiful collection of magical plants. Lovers of gardens and history will be delighted by this place, where they can observe a multitude of plant varieties. In the category of vegetable plants: ecbalie (explosive cucumber), cucurbits, fennel, artichokes, cabbage... Also medicinal plants: sage, saponiferae..., aromatic and magical plants: sorrel, thyme, rosemary. Follow the visit with passionate guides to know everything about plants.
