LE HÂVRE DE LA GACHERE
Bassins des Chasses in Brem-sur-Mer, fed by water from the Auzance and Vertonne rivers.
The creation of the salt marshes and vineyards on the island of Olonne dates back to the Roman Empire. This gulf was transformed into a harbour and then into 2 basins separated by the Bauduère hillock, which were gradually filled in: these are the present-day marshes of La Gachère to the north and the Bassin des Chasses to the south. These 2 basins are now connected by the Bauduère canal. They are fed by the water of the rivers Auzance and Vertonne, and communicate with the sea thanks to the locks. The line of the shoreline has changed, making the Vertime island a peninsula.
