NOTRE-DAME CHURCH
Neo-Gothic style church in Challans which has one of the oldest Christian remains: a Merovingian cross from the 6th century
In neo-Gothic style, it has one of the oldest Christian remains: a Merovingian cross from the 6th century from the first sanctuary. The building houses a painting by Lagrenée of the Assumption, classified as a historical monument. Admire the Stations of the Cross, which won first prize at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, the stained glass windows in the choir, and the 13-metre organ by Mahler. Unusual curiosity: the separation of the church and the bell tower. A first building was erected in the 11th century, but as it was in danger of collapsing, the present church was built opposite in 1893.
