CASTLE OF COMMEQUIERS
This castle surrounded by water, forms an octagon with eight towers linked together by a surrounding wall
At the exit of the town, on the road to Saint-Christophe-du-Ligneron, on the right, a sign catches your eye: feudal castle. Currently the castle is closed to the public, work is planned, with the help of a subscription because the castle of Commequiers was selected to integrate the program of the Foundation of Heritage managed by Stéphane Bern. Take advantage of the surroundings of the castle, its park, its pond to make beautiful walks in family. The 8 towers rise from the feudal castle which seems to be placed on the water. It would have been built in the 15th century on the bases of an ancient fortress, itself built on the site of a Roman camp. It forms a regular octagon with eight towers connected by a wall, and was once surrounded by deep moats. The barony of Commequiers dates back at least to the year 1000. King Louis XIII was on his way to drive out the Protestant troops of the Duke of Rohan, who were concentrated on the island of Riez. Following repeated revolts by the Huguenots, Richelieu ordered the dismantling of certain castles, including this one. The breaches made in the wall, and in each tower, seem to indicate the beginnings of a systematic demolition in order to put the citadel out of defence. Today, the site is maintained by the association of the Friends of the Castle of Commequiers which organizes visits and an event in early August, the Medieval, during which visitors live a total immersion in the medieval world (shows, village, food, crafts).
