PAY LIME KILNS
The lime kilns used to transform limestone into lime, which was used as mortar for construction in Foussais-Payré
Easily identifiable, these kilns are cylindrical in shape with interior walls generally made of bricks. Lime kilns were used to transform limestone into lime, which was used as mortar for construction. The limestone quarries, which are very numerous in the South Vendée, were used for construction, and for agriculture to enrich the farmland. Of atypical shape, the lime kilns of Payré were built in 1859 by the Société des houillères et verrerie de Vendée and were operated until 1915.
