ABBAYE ROYALE NOTRE-DAME DE LIEU-DIEU
A private abbey, classified as a historical monument, with a charming church in Jard-sur-Mer.
Founded in 1197 by Richard the Lionheart for the canons of the Premonstratensian order, this private abbey is a listed historic monument. It has known prosperous periods and more tragic episodes of looting and dismantling. During the Revolution, it was sold at auction and used as a farm building. Since it was bought by private individuals who have been renovating it for years, it can be visited in August. The entrance is through a beautiful vaulted room. It was the scriptorium at the time, today it is a chapel. A beautiful window, originally round, facing west, allowed light to enter the room. A door in this room opened to a dungeon, as the abbey had a power of justice. One room has a monumental fireplace: this was the chaufour where the monks came to warm up. A model of the abbey is on display to give you a better idea. It was also used to keep the fingers of the copyists in the nearby scriptorium at the right temperature. On the other side, the cloister where the garden used to be, and of which a Renaissance niche can still be seen. Back inside to admire the magnificent chapter house (also called chapter house), made up of six ribbed vaults supported by two beautiful columns. We pass into the sacristy, which we can guess thanks to the oven that is enthroned there, because it is a host oven, in fact, it is smaller than a traditional bread oven.
