SAINTE-RADEGONDE CHURCH
Go there and contact
Dedicated to Sainte Radegonde, Queen of the Francs after his marriage with Clotaire 1 st, this church recalls the exodus to Jard-sur-Mer of Sainte-Croix-de-Poitiers, fleeing in 732 the advance of the armies sarrasines and taking with them the relics of Saint Radegonde itself. Richard's Heart of Lion, King of England and Count of the Poitou, was the Romanesque edifice completed in 1198. It was fortified in the th century and partially destroyed by Protestants in the th century. It was rebuilt and modified, which explains the Gothic style of the Virgin Chapel. This church was once surrounded by moat. The charpente arch, the astonishing central pillar at the palm leaf top and the chapel of the Virgin form a very beautiful ensemble. His altarpiece and painting of the Rosary (painted by Peinus) deserve a glance.
