THE OLD WASH-HOUSE
This washhouse could accommodate about twenty washerwomen, generally "professionals" of the laundry
In the heritage of La Chaize-le-Vicomte, there is this wash-house. Built and put into service in 1874, it was used until the 1970s, gradually being dethroned by washing machines. It could accommodate about twenty washers, generally "professionals" of the laundry, who went from house to house to wash the clothes. It is the water of the stream Lignageau that feeds the basin. The main spring, known as the Aumônerie, never dries up, even in the most severe droughts, as in 1976. This explains the location of the wash house.
