Museological space in a World War II blockhouse

Here is a visit that is a little off the beaten track. The Observatoire de l'Estran de l'île de Noirmoutier invites you to visit the fish lock n° 7 (known as Bon Secours) and the Maison des écluses et pêches traditionnelles, a museological space fitted out in a blockhouse of the Second World War. The island of Noirmoutier has many vestiges of fisheries called "fish locks" along its coastline. This fishing practiced since ancient times was the subject in February 1566 of an order of King Charles IX followed by that enacted by King Henry III in 1584. Louis XIV in 1681, made specify the construction of itIn 1854, a ministerial decree authorized the exploitation of 17 fisheries on the island. In 1872, there were 206 locks built or to be built in the Bourgneuf bay. In 1878, the Noirmoutrins operated 118 locks. In 1904, on the oyster farming cadastre, drawn up by the Navy, there were 142 locks on the Noirmoutrin coast. In 1986, on March 18th, the last lock ceased to exist administratively. But thanks to this association, if you are on holiday on the island during the summer, you can learn more. To know everything about the history of the fisheries, what they were used for, the names of the fishing instruments and how they were used, but of course, to know more about the fauna and flora of the dune and the foreshore. An enriching visit for lovers of nature and traditional fishing.
