FLOCELLIERE CASTLE
Castle with a park to visit, one of the oldest in Western France and one of those inhabited for nearly 1,000 years
The castle of La Flocellière is one of the oldest castles in Western France: it dates from 1090 and has belonged to the Vignial family since 1979. A stronghold since the 11th century and a defensive bastion, it is, during the Middle Ages, one of the main fortresses of what was then called the Bas-Poitou. The construction of the keep, surrounded by 6 towers, took place in the 13th century, then its enlargement in the 15th century provided it with a beautiful spiral staircase. Last known military episode: the siege of the castle by the troops of the league in 1597. It is here that in the 18th century was held the marriage, in the presence of part of the court, a daughter of the Marquis de la Flocelliere with Philippe de La Rochejaquelein. At the end of January 1794, during the dark hours of the Wars of the Vendée, the castle was devastated and burned by the infernal columns of General Turreau. The restoration in the 19th century added a Gothic gallery to connect the dungeon to the castle. The old orangery of the eighteenth century and part of the east wing are converted into housing and the park planted with various species. Poets and great men have resided in this beautiful site whose name means "the flower of heaven". The castle of La Flocellière is one of the rare castles inhabited for nearly 1,000 years. It is owned by Viscount Patrice Vignial and his wife since 1979. Partially burned by the infernal columns in 1794, it is classified as a historical monument. Its park is open to visitors.
