GROTTO FATHER DE MONTFORT
Grotto where Father Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort retired to meditate, became a popular place of pilgrimage after his death
An apostolic missionary, Father Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort led missions in the West after the Wars of Religion (reconstruction of churches, renewal of Christianity). In 1715, he retired to this cave to meditate. His life as a hermit did not last long: he was chased away after cutting down trees in the royal forest without permission. His last pilgrimage took him to Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre where he died in 1716. Pope Pius XII declared him a "Saint" in 1947. After his death, the grotto became a popular place of pilgrimage. Unusual!
