Sculpture of a plane planted in the ground, raised in 1930 in memory of the aviator, René Guilbaud
This sculpture of a plane planted in the ground, created by the Martel brothers, sculptors from Vendée, was erected in 1930 in memory of the aviator, René Guilbaud, a local child who died in the polar seas. He was a brilliant naval officer who became an aviator: a of the pioneers of naval aviation. After a dazzling career, he tragically disappeared at the North Pole in June 1928 while trying to rescue the expedition of Nobile, the Italian general whose airship had run aground on the ice floe.
