The Halles, built in 1765, are the great attraction of the city
The Halles, built in 1765, are the great attraction of the city. A vast rectangle measuring 55 m by 25 m, cut at an angle, it is supported on its perimeter by 41 large Doric-style stone columns and, within the building, by 61 wooden posts aligned in four rows around the central aisle. The framework, with its props, crossbeams and punches, is a masterpiece of harmony and skill. The marine carpenters of the surrounding ports have undoubtedly participated. The roof of half-round tiles organized in four sides is impressive.
