THE ISLAND OF THE PILLAR AND THE ABBEY OF LA BLANCHE
Island belonging to the Conservatoire du Littoral, with two lighthouses and a semaphore in the center of Noirmoutier-en-l'Ile.
It is located about 4,500 m northwest of the island of Noirmoutier, opposite the port of Herbaudière. It is uninhabited and belongs to the Conservatoire du Littoral (since 1994). It houses two lighthouses (one on a cylindrical tower, ashlar, the other in the shape of a truncated pyramid crowned by a red brick wall), and a semaphore (a former dwelling house) in the center of the island. In 1172, the Cistercian monks established an abbey there (known as de la Blanche).
