THE WEARING OF THE HERBAUDIÈRE
Visit of the port of Herbaudière which was used as a shelter for the pilot boats of the Loire entrance since the century.
The Herbaudière cove was used as a shelter for pilot boats at the entrance to the Loire from the 17th century. A first large jetty was built in 1869, a second one in 1950, constituting a protected basin. At the beginning of the century, it was a sardine port. Numerous pinnaces (boats), steered by crews from Noirmoutre, ensured an important fishing. The island had 4 canneries. When the last one closed in 1965, the activity continued thanks to crab and spider crab. A vast marina was added in 1973 : the first one built in Vendée !
