Major abbey offering daily visits and organizing exceptional musical evenings and a family show
Founded in 1068, Saint-Vincent Abbey is one of the few complete monastic complexes in the Bas-Poitou region. A perfect example of the rigor of monastic life at the time, the 12th-century cloister is the only fully preserved Romanesque cloister in Western France. Queen of France, Eleanor of Aquitaine, granted it the status of Royal Abbey in 1141. The secrets of monastic life in the Middle Ages are revealed on touch screens along a glass walkway. Thanks to the magic of technology, medieval instruments make the galleries resound with forgotten melodies. As for Romanesque sculpture, it can be discovered in the canons' dormitory, where fiber optics magnify the works on display. A virtual journey to the heart of the 12th-century abbey, thanks to 3D reconstructions. Discover monastic life, meet the canons and other key figures in the abbey's history, thanks to the optical theater. Daily tours in July and August of the abbey church, cloister, canons' dormitory and convent buildings. In this majestic setting, on July 25, 30, August 1, 6, 8, 13, 15 and 20 at 9pm, eight exceptional musical evenings will be staged, featuring opera arias. From Wednesday to Sunday, from 10/07 to 25/08, at 11:30am, 3pm and 5pm, take part in an amazing family show to discover the great history of the Abbey: "Chants d'ailes". Finish with a visit to the abbey garden. Nearby bike and hiking trails.
