MICHEL BROSSELIN NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE
A remarkable reserve at Saint-Denis-du-Payré, a renowned ornithological site, home to grey cranes, great egrets, etc.
In the south of the Vendée, the Michel Brosselin National Nature Reserve at Saint-Denis-du-Payré is a renowned ornithological site! A high-quality observatory allows you to discover this remarkable natural heritage. In fact, it's one of the finest observatories in France! You'll be able to consult various interpretation panels, take advantage of ornithological guides, identification plates, a fresco on the annual cycle of birds or a map of migration corridors... The Pôle des espaces naturels du Marais poitevin, created in 2012, is the place to pick up your tickets to visit the reserve. The Michel Brosselin National Nature Reserve was created in 1976 and protects 207 hectares of communal meadows. Despite its modest size, the site, managed by the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux, already boasts 275 recorded bird species: white stilt, redshank, marsh harrier, black-tailed godwit, pintail, white spoonbill, lapwing, greylag goose... The site is the only one in the Vendée to host a dormitory of 800 grey cranes. You may also spot the great egret here. Follow a 400 m stilted path to reach the sheltered observatory, equipped with 18 telescopes and seating. In front of you lies the heart of the nature reserve, a haven for wild birds, most of them migratory. Note that the nature reserve has been awarded the Tourism & Handicap and Qualité Tourisme labels.
