ST. MAURICE CHURCH
A church that is part of a large religious complex, with a bell tower, a frescoed ceiling
The original church was built on the initiative of the Benedictine monks of Schwarzach Abbey. It was part of the vast religious ensembles that flourished on both sides of the Rhine in the 11th and 12th centuries in response to the Cluniac reform. The bell tower is the oldest part. Its ceiling, decorated with a fresco by Haguenau resident Peter Sauer, was completed in 1766. The Baroque altar by the famous 18th-century painter Feurstein is adorned with remarkable statuettes of Saint Sophie and Saint Maurice.
