Hill which was one of the largest concentrations of mills in the Vendée at Mouilleron-Saint-Germain
Less famous than the Mont des Alouettes, the hill of the mills of Mouilleron-en-Pareds, called "Moulins de Lattre" is nevertheless an emblematic place of the commune. It was one of the largest concentrations of mills in the Vendée! Their wings were used to communicate during the Vendée wars. They were completely destroyed during the Revolution by Westermann and 14 of them were rebuilt in 1852 on the same sites. Today 8 are still visible, 4 of them restored, and the rest more or less in ruins or hidden in the landscape. The shadow of Georges Clemenceau and Marshal de Lattre de Tassigny hangs over this place. Indeed, they lived side by side on this hill. These mills, which date from the 19th century, are classified as historical monuments, including the remains of the wings and the mechanism. It was the wife of Marshal de Lattre de Tassigny, Simone, who had one of them restored and transformed into a chapel in memory of her son killed in Indochina in 1951. The first two mills on the hill had in fact been bought by the marshal in 1929 on the advice of Clemenceau, who feared they would disappear. In 1957, the de Lattre mill was listed in the Inventory of Historical Monuments and 25 hectares of the site in the supplementary inventory. The fourth mill is only a ruin of a few meters high, which amuses the children because it is possible to enter it and makes think of a house of elves. To better discover the place, take the "Sentier des Meuniers".
