A privileged passageway for certain bird species: grey herons, kingfishers, mallards, etc
A must-see destination in the Pays des Achards, Lac du Jaunay stretches between Saint-Julien-des-Landes (left bank) and La Chapelle-Hermier (right bank). Lac du Jaunay is a 114-hectare protected natural area. The lake is renowned for its fishing and other sporting activities, including hiking, mountain biking and geocaching, as well as water sports such as canoeing, pedal boating for the whole family, sailing and simply taking a leisurely stroll. The observatory bridge at Moulin des Rochelles, in La Chapelle Hermier, is a strategic spot for wildlife observation. Lac du Jaunay is a favored stopover for a number of bird species: grey herons, kingfishers, mallards, tawny owls, as well as reptiles such as tree frogs, and if you're lucky, otters... A map of Lac du Jaunay is available from the Pays des Achards Tourist Office, giving details of activities and starting points for hikes and trails around the lake. There are 6 hiking trails (including one around the lake) offering a variety of panoramic views, from waterside walks to paths overlooking the lake. Bring your own picnic and enjoy lunch in one of the picnic areas around the lake. Each shore of Lac du Jaunay offers different attractions. Cross from one to the other via the road bridge between La Baudrière and Châteaulong.
