LE CHEVALEMENT D'EPAGNE
A unique industrial structure in Saint-Maurice-des-Noues, one of the last vestiges of mining activity in the region.
Located in the commune of Saint-Maurice-des-Noues, on the edge of the Mervent-Vouvant forest, the Epagne headframe is one of the last vestiges of mining activity in the region. This industrial work, unique in the region, reaches a height of 25 meters. Coal extraction in Epagne was intermittent from 1847 to 1925. In 1947, a reinforced concrete headframe replaced the first wooden one. It was never used because of the lack of coal and the lack of subsidies from the Charbonnages de France to the small mine in Vendée.
