HOUSE OF GEORGES CLEMENCEAU
The house of statesman Georges Clemenceau is one of the National Monuments to visit in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard.
Did you know that the Vendée was the birthplace of two illustrious figures in French history? Discover the resort where Georges Clemenceau spent the last ten years of his life. In 1919, after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Georges Clemenceau decided, at the age of 78, to retire on his Vendée land. This low house on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the "bicoque" as he called it, has remained in the exact state it was in when its occupant died in 1929. Amongst the politician's souvenirs, Japanese prints and paintings, Asian vases and Buddhist deities reveal an art lover with a passion for Far Eastern culture. On the dune, Clemenceau patiently composed a garden full of colorful touches on the advice of his great friend the painter Claude Monet (1840-1926). Their correspondence made it possible to restore the plantings in 2006. He did not hesitate to receive prestigious personalities, such as the ambassadors of Japan and the United States. The house was bought by the state shortly after his death. Since then, it has preserved the traces of the presence of the "Tiger", as well as testimonies of his friendships and his passions: literature, hunting and Far Eastern arts. This house is a National Monument. Visit, with a twin ticket, the house and gardens of Georges Clemenceau as well as the national museum Clemenceau - De Lattre, in Mouilleron-en-Pareds, in order to know everything about this historical character.
