ESSARTS CASTLE
This site has a 2,000-year history. A fortified enclosure with ramparts and "Saracen" towers was built on a Castra transitus, a sacrificial mound that became a castrum (wooden castle) in the 12th century, under the vassalage of the Viscounty of Thouars. Entrance gatehouses with drawbridges and crossbow loopholes. In the 16th century, a Renaissance château was built on the foundations of a 14th-century medieval castle. Charles VII passed through here, Henri IV stayed here. Charette imprisoned 300 republicans on the ashes of the castle burnt by the Colonnes Infernales...
