CHARLES MILCENDEAU MUSEUM
Museum housing Mozarabic mural paintings registered in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments
In the heart of the Breton Marais, visit the house of the painter Charles Milcendeau, listed as a Historic Monument. An artistic journey between the Vendée Marsh and Spain. The site consists of the museum, the house of the painter decorated with murals of the artist, the patio and garden. Between daily scenes of life in the Marais and flamboyant trips to Spain, welcome to the world of the painter Charles Milcendeau, a local child and student of Gustave Moreau. In a museum entirely renovated in 2013, with a romantic view on the marsh, take the time to appreciate a realistic painting borrowed from the Dutch style, to discover pastels with impressive formats... The house of the painter is composed of a small house of marshes and of a bourrine which was used as his studio. And what can we say about the murals in the painter's house, of Mozarabic inspiration, such as the room decorated with murals inspired by Andalusian Mudejar art. The Andalusian patio offers a haven of peace. Visitors can relax around the fountain. This friendly place hosts events throughout the summer season: concerts, unusual evenings, night of the museums... The garden is composed of a pleasure garden which extends to the edge of a waterway from which the painter used to leave by skiff, and an orchard, an orchard of yesteryear with hundred-year-old fruit trees. In July and August, every Tuesday at 8.30 pm, take part in the "Unusual Nights at the Haunted Museum" and come and experience an original visit!
