AISNE-MARNE BELLEAU AMERICAN CEMETERY
Aisne-Marne Belleau American Cemetery, with 8,000 bodies of soldiers killed in the battles of World War I.
Between June1 and 26, 1918, Belleau Wood was the scene of one of the most terrible battles of the First World War. The ground of the undergrowth still bears the traces of this battle which was one of the very first engagements of the American expeditionary corps. The number of soldiers killed at Belleau Wood is close to 8,000. The2nd American Division included an entire brigade of Marines, hence the nickname given to this place: "Marine Brigade Wood".
