It underwent numerous transformations over the centuries - documents attesting to its existence as early as the 12th century - including an extension in the 19th century, necessitated by the city's industrial development and resulting population influx. Three storeys of galleries were then created - galleries traditionally occupied by men during services, with women and children remaining below. The church is remarkable for its capacity: 1,800 worshippers. One of the largest.
