Church dating from 1695, with 3 floors of wooden gallery, typical of many churches in the Basque Country in Hélette
The church of Sainte-Marie d'Hélette, like those of the former diocese of Bayonne, has three floors of wooden galleries, typical of many churches in the Basque Country. It dates back to 1695; traditionally, the men sat in it while the women sat below. The choir is richly decorated in the baroque spirit. The present bell tower was erected in 1885, replacing a wall tower. The church contains a statue of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, classified by the Ministry of Culture. The cemetery surrounds the church on 3 sides and contains discoidal steles.
