MUSÉE BASQUE DU PASTORALISME ET DU FROMAGE
A temple to ewe's milk cheese, where you can discover all the finesse of the Basque white gold
In this temple of ewe's milk cheese, you'll discover all the finesse of the Basque white gold, a speciality of the Agour cheese dairy, voted 2 times best cheese in the world... A video briefly introduces you to the peculiarities of the Basque country, the vitality of its economy... the shepherd's cayolar, its architectural principle, the role of the family, the importance of the etxe - the Basque farm, the place to live, the sheepfold with its know-how over the centuries. Further on, 2 other rooms, including one presenting the farmhouse of the 21st century. Imagine stepping through the door of a living space, from child to grandmother, then into the sheepfold with its antique objects and even the ewe in the straw... then into the 21st century, in a room that opens onto the cellar on either side, with its line-up of cheeses lining the length of the room. Then it's on to the boutique, where you can sample our PDO ossau iraty cheeses, matured in our cellars for 4 to 17 months, with a natural crust, some of which are just rubbed with Espelette chilli pepper. The boutique also offers Arnabar, Bipia and Massonde products, Irouléguy wines, Brana liqueurs and local ciders and beers. You'll also find Maison Agour's 100% natural, preservative-free, colorant-free artisanal ice creams made from sheep's milk, as well as a range of cookies, home-made pastries and cured meats. A useful immersion in taste.
