ÎLE DES FAISANS
An island under French and then Spanish rule, alternating every 6 months since the war that ended in 1659.
On this island, a small piece of land of 3,000 m² that sits in the middle of the Bidasoa River, there have never been pheasants but ducks. Also called the island of the Conference, since in 1659 the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed which put an end to the long period of war between France and Spain. Legally, this island is under French authority for six months and the following six months it becomes Spanish and so on. For the record, it is amusing to know that on this island, in 1904, Paul Déroulède and Jean Jaurès fought a duel.
