HARISPURU MAKILAS
Bâton Basque is both a shepherd's walking stick and a defensive weapon concealed under the pommel
The Basque Country is home to a number of traditional objects, steeped in the history of its land. The Makila is one of them; this Basque stick is both a shepherd's walking stick and a defensive weapon concealed beneath the pommel. The stick is made from medlar wood. Both a weapon and an art object, the makila is given to honor a person or to show friendship. The Harispuru brothers' workshop, on the road to the Osquich Pass and in the village square, continues to produce handcrafted models, and opens its doors to explain how they are made.
