A fine example of military architecture, built in ashlar at Chivres-Val.
The fort of Condé is a very beautiful example of the military architecture of the 19th century. This historical monument is one of the bastions of the defensive curtain designed by General Séré de Rivières after the defeat of 1870. Built in ashlar, this pentagonal building with a surface area of 5 hectares is in the tradition of French fortification from Vauban to Maginot. The whole is covered by three meters of grassy ground. From the outside, the fort appears as a vast grassy knoll. This site played a decisive role during the First World War in the continuation of the fighting on the Chemin des Dames. The monument has retained part of its barracks, which could accommodate up to 650 men - soldiers, non-commissioned officers and officers. The site offers a beautiful view of the valley and the Chemin des Dames.
