BASQUE MONUMENT
The Monument des Basques is an original representation of the fighting men and women of south-west France.
Erected in 1928 in memory of the soldiers of the South-West who made up the 36th Infantry Division, the Monument des Basques, the work of the sculptor Claude Grange, is worth seeing because it is very original! Indeed, the Basque identity of these fighters coming from Mont-de-Marsan, Pau, Bayonne and Targes is underlined by a peasant wearing a beret and traditional costume. The man then turns his back to the battlefield, in the direction of his homeland. A surprising representation that goes against the military "heroisation" of the time.
