FATHER'S CASTLE
This building dating from the and centuries in Gothic and Renaissance styles is located three kilometers from Fère-en-Tardenois.
The castle of Fère-en-Tardenois is an ancient fortified castle built in the 13th century by the Count of Tardenois, nestled in the heart of the woods, three kilometers from Fère-en-Tardenois. It has witnessed many battles and has been the seat of several royal courts. The 13th century castle stands on a mound surrounded by a deep moat. Its construction began in 1206 under the impulse of Robert de Dreux and Anne de Braine. It then became the first known fortress without a keep. It is in 1529 that its incredible transformation begins. On the plateau, the bailey was built, lined with new outbuildings and an entrance with three pavilions. Around 1555, the connétable's architect, Jean Bullant, created an original building: he built an arched bridge over the ravine separating the bailey from the castle, which has all the characteristics of a Roman monument. The key of the central arch culminates at 17 meters. Two galleries 60 meters long and 3 meters wide were superimposed on these arches. Today, the 16th century installations have almost completely disappeared, leaving the ruins of the medieval castle. But the Renaissance gallery-bridge, with its superstructure removed, has fortunately survived. You can walk on it and enjoy the peaceful setting of this medieval site, classified as a Historic Monument. The last owner of the ruins donated them to the Aisne General Council. As for the old stables, they are now home to a sumptuous five-star hotel with 35 rooms and suites!
