A cemetery with 62 tombs that mark the history of Sephardic Jews fleeing the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal.
In the early 17th century, Sephardic Jews fleeing the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal were welcomed to La Bastide-Clairence from the parent community in Bayonne. They enjoyed a relatively autonomous status, and undertook to provide the village with a doctor and an apothecary. What remains of their presence is the Jewish cemetery, opposite the present-day cemetery, which marks a page in their history. The only remains are large tombstones that were deciphered by Professor Gérard Nahon. The oldest of the 62 tombs dates back to 1620.
