ARDON DOOR
A remarkable gateway with the appearance of a small castle, it was the gateway to Laon's first royal palace.
The Ardon Gate, also known as Royée, was once the first entrance to the nearby royal palace. Over the centuries, it has been remodeled and enriched. The addition of watchtowers to the façade gives it the appearance of a small castle. One of its walls still dates back to the 13th century! Legend has it that the breach was secretly used by Roland, Charlemagne's famous nephew, on his way to Roncesvalles in 778. Today, it guides you to the southern ramparts or the cathedral forecourt.
