Western Europe's largest beech forest, the Iraty forest at Larrau / Larraine
From Larrau, an impressive road climbs up to the Iraty site, an almost desert-like landscape with no population, as it has long been inaccessible. a 20 km winding road takes you to the summit, the Col d'Iraty. Spanning 17,194 hectares on either side of the border, the Forêt d'Iraty is said to be the largest beech forest in Western Europe. The beech forest rises from 900 m to 1,500 m above sea level in the shape of a wide cirque. In autumn, the views are magnificent. At Chalet de Cize, one exhibition follows another. And it's in this privileged and exceptional setting, ideal for discovering a site preserved from mass tourism, that you can follow one of the many marked trails in summer, and in winter, the same trails on snowshoes or sledges, with family or friends.
