SAINT-JEAN-DES-VIGNES ABBEY

Saint-Jean-des-Vignes Abbey is a must-see in Soissons! This abbey was one of the richest of the Middle Ages. Founded in 1076 by Hugues Le Blanc (Lord of Château-Thierry). Today, the ruins have retained their elegant spires, which rise to a height of 75 m, making them an intriguing sight. Inside, you'll find a remarkable two-vessel refectory, whose renovation has made the white stone shine, while stained glass windows illuminate the room in blue and green. Descend a few steps and wander through the vaulted cellars, where the atmosphere is conducive to letting your imagination wander. The exteriors are just as remarkable: part of the ^13th-century cloister has remained intact, with gargoyles and sculptures looking down on you. The garden is a veritable haven of peace. In this historic landmark, you'll find all the information you need to understand the history of the city of Soissons. The Centre d'Interprétation de l'Architecture is located here. It is housed in the former abbot's residence, which has also been fully restored. Explanatory panels reveal the abbey's secrets, helping visitors to understand its wealth and the troubles it has experienced over the centuries.
