The opening of the Rue du Théâtre-Romain in 1933 led to a tower that belongs to the medieval fortification belt of the city. This is the only remaining remnant of this defensive system. A more ancient element is visible on Mantova Square at the bottom of the Roman theatre. It is part of the wall of the th century Roman enclosure flanked by a tower. This wall bound the city over an area of 12 hectares. With the Macé Tower, we have a few meters away from the two oldest defence systems in the city.
