ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH
Church which marks in a remarkable way the transition between the Romanesque and the Gothic art in Beauvais.
Built in the 12th, 13th and 16th centuries, Saint-Étienne church is a remarkable example of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic art. The transept gable features a wheel-shaped rose window, nicknamed "the wheel of fortune": it shows that a man who has reached the pinnacle of glory and wealth will soon fall into decline... In the Middle Ages, the mayor would symbolically come here to swear allegiance to the rights of the commune! Saint-Étienne church boasts remarkable 16th-century stained-glass windows. It was listed as a historic monument in 1846.
