ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH
A modest church, with a very elaborate, carved and gilded altarpiece in the choir, with wooden statues, and a baptismal font
In 1335 when Lestelle was born, a modest church was built on the edge of the Gave terrace on the site where the cross of Castet stands. This cross is all that remains of the memory of this first place of worship swept away by a catastrophic flood of the Gave in 1678 with several houses around. In 1679, the site was chosen on the edge of the central square of the bastide where most of the local craftsmen were located. The first stone was laid on August 22, 1679 and the church was blessed in March 1682. Today in the building, you will observe a remarkable heritage.
