CASTLE OF CONVENIENCE
This castle, located in the heart of the city, is divided into several entities that give dynamism to the visit.
Entering this imperial palace is like stepping back in time to the days of Napoleon! The chateau is divided into a number of entities, giving the visit a dynamic feel. It is unique in that it is located right in the center of town, as Charles V wished to acquire land within the city. Louis XV was responsible for the building's current configuration. Once you've passed the majestic entrance gates, you can easily obtain your ticket, which you'll need to treasure for access to all four museums. You'll then climb majestic staircases to reach the Musée du Second Empire, the Musée de l'Impératrice and the royal and imperial apartments. The tours are well explained and comprehensive. The apartments take you on a journey from the 18th century to the Second Empire. Visitors stroll between rooms that have all been refurnished. In the Second Empire museum, you'll discover a large gallery with paintings by Pérignon and Thomas Couture, as well as imperial family souvenirs. The last room is adorned with chandeliers, and your children will be delighted to discover the period children's carriages. In the Musée de l'Impératrice, you'll enter into the intimacy of the sovereigns: in particular, there's an exceptional series of photographs on encaustic salted paper. Finally, we recommend you visit the National Car and Tourism Museum: you'll be captivated by this dark room where vintage carriages are all parked next to each other, dating from the 18th to the early 20th century. It's as if princes and princesses were about to get off these horse-drawn carriages with their oversized wheels. An imperial railway carriage is also on display. Part of the museum is also devoted to the evolution of the bicycle: children love looking at the tricycles, bicycles and motorcycles of the period! Finally, don't forget to visit the château's park, which is open to all free of charge: Napoleon I wanted the park to be natural and open to the forest. In 1812, the garden was completely redesigned by Louis-Martin Berthault, with a strong presence of shrubs. On a practical note, you can download the château app to take your tour step by step. Children's booklets are available at reception (for ages 8 and up): they'll become investigators for the duration of the tour. A picnic area is available at the entrance to the park. Plan to spend several hours there!
