A sugar factory, Compiègne is the oldest surviving example of the French sugar industry.
Closed in 1969, this 19th-century sugar factory, restored by volunteers, presents the oldest testimony to the sugar industry in France: the transformation of sugar beet into sugar, the development of plant-based chemistry, but also the paternalism of bosses Marguerite and Gaston Benoît, the birth of trade unionism, women's work... On the program: permanent exhibitions, audio testimonials and original workshops, including the making of Picard soap with rapeseed oil and hair gel with linseed.
