LA CHAPELLE NOTRE-DAME DE LA HAUTE-VILLE
Chapel founded in the 14th century in the heart of the bastide because the parish church of Saint-Jean-de-Berraute was far away
The Notre-Dame-de-la-Haute-Ville chapel in Mauléon was built at the end of the 14th century. The inhabitants of the bastide, who complained that the parish church of Saint-Jean-de-Berraute was too far from the town, obtained permission to build a second place of worship in the heart of the bastide. This chapel was burnt down several times during the Wars of Religion. In the 16th century, the chapel was upgraded to cathedral status. The church subsequently became more modest.
