CITY HALL, MONTREAL CITY HALL
Uncluttered town hall facing the Place des Allées, with alternating arched and triangular pediment dormers
The Hôtel de Ville stands opposite the Place des Allées, on the site of the house of Enecot de Sponde, father of the poet Jean de Sponde. The building was commissioned by the Count of Gramont from the famous classical architect François de Mansart, who imposed a new, uncluttered style, easily identifiable by the alternating arched and triangular pediment dormers. In the 20th century, the building acquired an administrative function, even serving as a sub-prefecture.
