STONE CASTLE
A sublime castle that inspired Walt Disney for Sleeping Beauty, which you should not hesitate to visit (free).
When you see the castle after crossing the forest of Compiègne, you will probably say that it comes straight out of a fairy tale or a movie set. You will not be wrong because Walt Disney was inspired by it for Sleeping Beauty. It is an old castle whose creation was ordered by Louis of Orleans in 1393. It resisted two attempts of assault by the royal army, but the siege delivered by Richelieu on order of Louis XIII (1617) was fatal. Napoleon Ier buys Pierrefonds in 1811, but it is Napoleon III who gives him a second life. He entrusted its restoration to the architect Viollet-le-Duc, known for his great works such as Notre-Dame de Paris. It is this curious mixture of fortress and elegant architecture of the XIXth century which gives the castle its romantic singularity. Inside, there are elegant rooms amidst massive structures. The castle teams have also added modern touches, with a visit application "the fantastic menagerie" (to discover the castle with your family in the company of fantastic animals) and a touch table allowing a playful approach. If you do not have time to visit the interior, take a tour of the castle through the park (free access). Along the way you will see slingshots that have been preserved in their original state. Once up there, the view of the castle, the village, the pond and the forest is worth a look! A historical monument not to be missed.
