BENEDICTINE ABBEY
Abbey with a fortified door, beautiful stained glass windows in grisaille and a digital organ in the heart of the state forest of Saint-Jean.
The existence of the village in the middle of the state forest is linked to the Benedictine abbey founded in 1152 by Queen Adelaide, widow of Louis VI the Fat. This abbey was a convent of women until 1634, when they exchanged their roof with the canons of Royallieu, to escape the anxiety of living isolated. Only the fortified gateway with its two 15th century turrets remains, as a testimony to the enclosure that surrounded and protected the abbey. It constitutes a charming entrance to the quiet gardens of the magnificent 13th century abbey church!
