BOMBING MUSEUM
Museum of the Bombardments in Saint-Maximin with pieces of aircraft, uniforms, documents and more unusual objects.
Don't be fooled by the name, this museum brings a smile to your face with its moving story. It can be told to you with passion by the first craftsman of this collection: Gérard Lequien. He is regularly present to comment (with a communicative passion) on his collection. In 1943, Gérard saw a bomber crash in his commune of Oise. Since then, he has never stopped finding hundreds of objects from similar circumstances. By dint of investigations in the archives and field excavations in the Oise, he has found objects at 65 crash sites. His story is full of anecdotes, friendships with American pilots, epic research... We can also measure the peculiarity of the situation since during the summer of 1944: 59 planes were shot down in the area, 277 crew members died for only 4 civilians. Although the towns were destroyed, the inhabitants took refuge in the many local quarries. In its collection, we find pieces of planes, uniforms, documents, or more unusual objects such as a bomb casing transformed into a kayak! To ensure that the "duty to remember" continues, he bequeathed all his objects to the town hall of Saint-Maximin, a town that was 95% razed to the ground by Allied bombing in 1945.
