ST. GIRONS CHURCH
This monumental gothic church is now a national heritage site
From 1464 to 1530, three generations of Moneinchons will assume the construction of this monumental Gothic church, now listed as a national heritage site. Its originality lies in its exceptional framework, entirely in oak heart, which is in the form of a double asymmetrical overturned ship's hull. This frame of more than 50 meters long can be visited after climbing 72 steps under the huge slate roof. Unique in France by its age, its "virtuosity" and its huge dimensions, it is 16 metres wide, 61 metres long and 31 metres high, a height never before reached, and in particular this famous double-pitched roof hiding a real treasure in the heart of oak which required the cutting down of a thousand trees of which 70% of the original wood has been preserved. The whole is supported by an astonishing superimposition of St Andrew's crosses, aligned vertically one above the other up to the top of the church. The whole is illuminated by sound and light. The porch houses a Renaissance-style portal. Inside, the 18th century altarpiece and the 17th century organ, more than 300 years old, are worth a visit: a rare and masterly ensemble.
